The determination of phytoplankton species and the estimation of their abundance in the context of the Phytoplankton and Hydrology Monitoring and Surveillance Network, implemented by Ifremer (REPHY), are based in 2018 on 25 analysts spread over 12 sites. Proficiency testing by inter-laboratory or inter-analyst comparison is used to evaluate the performance of laboratories or analysts on specific skills. An International Phytoplankton Inter-comparison (IPI) is organized annually by the Marine Institute Phytoplankton unit of Galway (Ireland), to evaluate marine phytoplankton identification and enumeration performance. The IPI is implementing its inter-comparison exercises through the Marine Institute Ireland in cooperation with the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission of UNESCO (IOC) through its Science and Communication Centre on Harmful Algae at the University of Copenhagen, Denmark. The UK NE Atlantic Marine Biological Analytical Quality Control Scheme (NMBAQC) is one of their partners. In 2018, nine REPHY analysts were enrolled individually to participate in the IPI. The samples sent to the relevant analysts were used to also assess the skills of non-IPI analysts. A total of 21 on 25 REPHY analysts reported their results. This report describes the progress of the IPI and the Ifremer complementary test (Inter-Analyst Comparison) and presents only the results obtained for the Ifremer test. The objective is to provide elements to all REPHY staff in order to maintain a continuous improvement of practices and to determine actions required for this improvement.
La détermination des espèces phytoplanctoniques et l’estimation de leur abondance dans le cadre du Réseau d’observation et de surveillance du Phytoplancton et de l’Hydrologie, mis en œuvre par l’Ifremer (REPHY) s’appuie en 2018, sur 25 analystes répartis sur 12 sites. Les essais d'aptitude par comparaison inter-laboratoires ou inter-analystes sont utilisés pour évaluer les performances des laboratoires ou analystes sur des compétences spécifiques. Un exercice d’inter-comparaison international (IPI) est organisé tous les ans par le Marine Institute Phytoplankton unit de Galway (Ireland), pour évaluer les performances en identification et en dénombrement du phytoplancton marin. En 2018, neuf analystes du REPHY ont été inscrits à titre individuel pour participer à l’IPI. Les échantillons envoyés aux analystes concernés ont été utilisés pour évaluer aussi les compétences des analystes non-inscrits à l’IPI. Au total, 21 analystes sur les 25 du REPHY ont rendu leurs résultats. Ce rapport décrit le déroulement de l’IPI et de l’essai complémentaire Ifremer (Comparaison Inter-Analystes) et présente seulement les résultats obtenus pour l’essai Ifremer. L'objectif est d'apporter des éléments à l'ensemble du personnel du REPHY afin de permettre une amélioration continue des pratiques et de déterminer des actions à mettre en œuvre pour cette amélioration.
